For well over a century the standard reference on Australian flora, describing over 8000 plant species prepared by Bentham at Kew using the collection of the National Herbarium of Victoria loaned to him by Ferdinand von Mueller. Bentham's biographer, Nancy Burbridge writes: "It represents a prodigious intellectual effort never equalled." (Australian Dictionary of Biography).
