Dr George Bennett (1804-1893) settled permanently in Sydney in 1836 and died in 1893. He established a successful medical practice and became a leading figure in Colonial science. He was closely involved with many of the newly established societies such as the Australian Museum, the Acclimatization Society and the Zoological Society. He also corresponded regularly with many of the prominent natural history figures of the day, such as Richard Owen, and was John Gould's agent in Sydney. Wanderings in New South Wales, his first book, is primarily an account of the seven months Bennett spent exploring New South Wales in 1833.
