First published in 1789, Gilbert White's Selbourne is one of the most celebrated of all natural history commentaries. He was close to Sir Thomas Pennant and a regular correspondent. His famous book, like Walton's The compleat angler, has been the subject of numerous later editions. The Bowdler Sharpe edition of White's Selbourne is the most handsome and lavish of them all.
