Leonard Harrison Matthews (1901-1986) was for much of his life the world expert on marine mammals and a major authority on British mammals. He wrote many books including four volumes for the New Naturalist series. From 1924 to 1929 he lived on South Georgia studying the biology of whales and Southern Elephant Seals. His classic study of South Georgia book is a rarity in Antarctic literature and the author's first publication.
