Horace William Wheelwright (1815-1865), writing under the nom de plume "An Old Bushman", was a qualified attorney who migrated from England to Australia in 1852. He came in search of gold, was unsuccessful, and decided to put his love of field sports into practice by becoming a professional shooter of game. He supplied the Melbourne market with duck, quail, pigeon and kangaroo before leaving for Europe in 1859. An account of his Scandinavian experiences was published posthumously in 1866. He died in 1865 from injuries sustained from a fall in a London street. His account is one of the most informative and readable narratives of early bush life in the colony.
