Alan John "Jock" Marshall (1911-1967) was appointed the foundation professor of the zoology department of Monash University in Melbourne in 1960. He had a distinguished World War II service record in New Guinea and scientific career in London. He cultivated a larrikin reputation but was a brilliant biologist and populariser of natural history with many books to his name.
