London: John Van Voorst, 1860. Octavo, eight handcoloured lithographs by George French Angas. Later half morocco and marbled boards, a very good copy.
Bennett made a serious contribution to the unravelling of the Platypus mystery and his account of this extraordinary mammal is a classic. "The drawings, with a few exceptions, are from the accurate pencil of Mr G. F. Angas, well known for his correct delineations of subjects of natural history, and the author of three splendid works illustrative of the scenery and natives of New Zealand, South Australia and southern Africa ..."
