First published in 1805, with a second edition in 1822, John William Lewin's Prodromus Entomology, Natural History of the Lepidopterous Insects of New South Wales, was the first Australian natural history book illustrated with plates produced in Australia from original observation. Of enduring scientific value, with fourteen species first depicted and described by Lewin, this beautiful and rare book has not been republished before now.
The new edition contains 19 attractive coloured plates faithfully reproduced from the hand-coloured originals, and an enhanced facsimile of the delightful and interesting text giving a wonderful taste of Lewin's meticulous observations. Accompanying the text is a 30 page illustrated essay on the history and bibliography of this fascinating work including a census of known copies of the original editions. For the text the publishers have recreated electronic versions of the original typefaces and reset to exactly match the original editions in elegant and crisp typography.
Limited to 200 numbered copies, finely bound, the new edition reproduces original bindings. The Limited edition of 100 copies reproduces the first known publisher's binding of the second edition. The Deluxe edition (70 copies)reproduces the superior second publisher's binding of the second edition (c. 1827), with specially commissioned hand-marbled sides to match the original, while the Special edition (30 copies)choes a contemporary (1805) binding of the Large Paper sumptuous issue of the first edition with specially hand-marbled endpapers to march and fully gilt edges, and includes copies of both the first and second edition plates (37 in all) and the hand-tinted pink interleaves of the first edition.
