W. A. Horn funded this expedition which left Adelaide in May 1894 to explore central Australia, in particular the McDonnell Ranges. Much of the honours of this highly successful scientific expedition are rightly attributed to Baldwin Spencer who edited the results. Winnecke was the surveyor and meteorologist although the frontispiece of his account shows a picture of the expedition members with himself labelled as leader. This separate account was the result of a dispute between Winnecke and W. A. Horn. It was first published in a folio foolscap form in 1896.
