The most important reference work on Australian ornithology of the twentieth century. The Australian Ornithologists Union (for most of its existence add the Royal prefix, now Birds Australia) started with 135 members thus explaining the scarcity of the early volumes. In the first volume, A. J. Campbell the first editor of The Emu, gives an account of the formation of the Union. A set of The Emu is the cornerstone of any serious collection of Australian ornithology.
