This pocket guide is essentially a reduced version of the original work by Smythies comprising the original plates painted by Commander A.M. Hughes, together with any extra information useful to help identify each bird species. Captions are placed opposite the plates (with additional pages where required) giving the common name, scientific name and total length of each species with brief descriptive notes if necessary. Descriptions of species which are not illustrated are placed as close as possible to the captions for related species.
